Jerry Jeff Walker – March 16, 1942 – October 23, 2020

While, like most Texans of my age, I knew of Jerry Jeff Walker back in high school. Friends even hung out in Luckenbach during summer vacations.

His first hit has always been a favourite of mine… Mr. Bojangles

But it wasn’t until one of my friends became a band member that I really paid attention.

Freddie Krc was a guy I met at a concert at my High School. It turned out we had a history, our grandparents lived in the same small town in western Fort Bend county. His parents and my mother attended school together. And though we never met until the end of high school we hung out over the course of a couple of years before moving on with our lives… I can still remember running into his mother at the local Whataburger and having her fill me in on his latest… first BW Stevenson, then Jerry Jeff and the Lost Gonzo’s. Like all mother’s, she was beaming when she kept me updated…

There are good reasons why Freddie Steady Krc has a Lifetime Achievement Award from Texas Academy of Music, a Texas Tornado Award from Buddy Magazine, and is in the Texas Music Hall of Fame. And his rich musical history all comes together in his Freddie Steady’s Wild Country project, a setting in which the music of his many incarnations all comes together.

This singer / songwriter / guitarist / drummer / renaissance Texan has plied his musical wares around the world the past few decades. A charismatic live performer, Krc wins over any audience with his captivating original songs and engaging stage presence. He also enjoys capturing the spirit of his favorite cover songs. Krc (rhymes with search) landed in Austin at the moment that a musical revolution was getting started at a styles-don’t-matter joint called the Armadillo.

Like the old bumper sticker said, Jerry Jeff wasn’t born in Texas… but he got here as quick as he could… and the kicker was, he stayed and made it his.

Listening to his early Texas work today, you would never think he wasn’t a native. And it seems looking back he was always here and in the news…

Rest in peace Jerry Jeff.
