In the early 2000s, while wandering the digital trails of the burgeoning internet, I happened upon a blog that felt less like a website and more like a front porch. It was “Fragments From Floyd,” written by Fred First. Over the years, we became “virtual friends,” connected by a shared reverence for the quiet beauty of the Blue Ridge.
When Fred gathered his essays into his book, A Slow Road Home, I didn’t just read it—I felt it. It moved me enough to do something I’d never done before: I sat down and wrote my very first book review.
A Meeting in the Highlands
In 2011, the “virtual” became reality. My wife and I traveled to the mountains of Virginia, where we finally met Fred in person. Like any traveler trying to hold onto a moment, I took a few photographs of our time there—images of a place and a friendship that have stayed with me even as the years rolled on and Fred eventually traded the familiar waters of Goose Creek Run for the landscapes of Missouri.
Old Memories, New Tools
Fast forward two decades. I’ve been spending my time lately at the intersection of heritage and technology, experimenting with AI to see how it might help tell these old stories. I had the “crazy” idea to see if that original book review—written so long ago—had a melody hidden inside it.
I took those words to Suno, and after several iterations and careful revisions to find the right soul for the track, the song you hear in this video emerged.
Bringing the Vision Together
Today, I decided to let the visual side catch up. Using VidMuse, I paired the song with the photographs from that 2011 trip, letting the AI interpret the mood of the collection. After a final assembly in Canva, this is the result: a tribute to a slow road, an old friend, and the enduring spirit of the mountains.
